Andrea Caldarelli scores best race result of 2012 in Sugo

Andrea Caldarelli scored his best result of the season in the 2012 edition of the Japanese-based SUPER GT championship. The 22-year-old racer from Abruzzo, partnered by Yuji Kunimoto in the KeePer Kraft team, brought his LEXUS SC430 to end up in 6th at Sportsland Sugo, achieving the best result of the season for the two rookies and for the Japanese squad.Starting from practice, on a racetrack which highlights the driver's abilities, Caldarelli was immediately able to run in the leading pack of the charts before confirming the same pace in qualifying. After his team-mate Kunimoto made his way to the Super Lap session, Andrea brought the number 35 LEXUS SC430 to the second row, with a fourth spot that was the best result scored by the team since this year. At the start, Caldarelli quickly gained two spots and hit the second position, which he held on until lap 26. While lapping a GT300 car, he was forced to lift the throttle in order not to compromise his race with a contact and lost two spots back to 4th. Despite the issue, the Italian cruised back to the tail of the leaders and logged some extremely fast laptimes. On lap 37, he made it back to the pits and handed the car over to Kunimoto, who ended up the race in 6th.

“We had left Sepang in a bitter mood due to a penalty assessed to us after the race which denied all the efforts done over Malaysian weekend. Back in Japan, and definitely helped by the home advantage, we managed to round out a really positive weekend. Last year I cruised to my best result in Formula Nippon at Sugo and I'm proud I managed to repeat it all again in SUPER GT. I want to thank the KeePer Kraft team for having provided me with a sensational car I drove to 4th place in qualifying and up to to the second position on race day. The sixth-place finish we got in the end is the result of a massive commitment, although I still have a lot to learn in terms of getting around the lapped cars, a thing that cost myself and Kunimoto a chance to fight for the podium. The good results scored last week at Suzuka also make me confident for the next round. The historical Formula 1 GP venue will be hosting the following race of the series on August the 19th"
