Andrea Caldarelli faces tough weekend ad Okayama

Andrea Caldarelli enjoyed his maiden SUPER GT weekend at the Okayama circuit in Japan: the Italian racer was at his debut in the top Grand Touring competition of the Country. The 22-year-old from Pescara faced a tough time as he lined-up with his LEXUS KeePer SC430. In practice, Andrea and team-mate Yuji Kunimoto successfully tested the modifications done by the engineers after last month's test at the venue. Unfortunately, he couldn't make his way on-track for qualifying following to a mechanical issue happened to Kunimoto. The session, held with the same format of Formula 1, did not allow the team to rejoin forcing them to settle for a last row position. In the warm-up, Caldarelli managed to be back on-track and finalized the package for the race. On race day, he was behind the wheel at the start and managed to climb up to the 9th spot before a pit-stop happened at lap 40. Unfortunately, right after going back behind the wheel Kunimoto, who was running on cold tires, crashed in Turn 1 before being forced to retire when a points finish was clearly in the frame.

“My first SUPER GT race did not go as I expected but that's racing. In a pretty delicate moment like this, the LEXUS TEAM KeePer Kraft emerged in all their value showing an impressive team spirit. They followed what my feedback indicated and the situation, compared to the recent test, kept improving even though we have a lot still to do. On race day, I drove a pretty good stint, completing several overtakes and increasing my feeling with the LEXUS KeePer SC430. I cant' wait to be back on-track for the next round, scheduled for May the 4th at Fuji".
