Caldarelli makes his way to top in winter testing

27-03-2009

The winter break is over and, after putting books back to the locker and
asking for some days off from school, Andrea Caldarelli was finally able
to jump into the cockpit of his Mercedes-Powered SG Formula Dallara
Formula 3 car. The Italian took part in the two collective tests held at
Estoril (March 18-19) and Valencia (March 23-24), joining 27 fellow F3
Euro Series drivers at the start of one of the most competitive seasons in
the championship's history. Caldarelli, who has been confirmed as a part
of the Toyota Drivers Program, ended up in 16th in Portugal, after focusing
on setting is car up rather than on pure performance. At Valencia,
he then progressively lowered his marks, ending up in 11th overall and
leaving the venue with a good amount of confidence. At his series'
debut, Andrea proved he'll be able to enter the top-10 from the beginning,
and fight with the main guns of the Formula 3 panorama. After a
couple more private tests, Caldarelli will join the pack at Hockenhein on
May 16-17, for the season's grand opening.
Andrea Caldarelli said:
"It's been an intense week, with 8 really competitive sessions, in which I
worked a lot on my car, improving the global feeling with my engineer
and with the whole team. At Estoril, we tried several mechanical and setup
solutions, but we ended up not being as fast as we expected. The
situation came to an improvement at Valencia, where the car was really
efficient. I'm really happy that we showed we have the potential to fight
for a top spot. This one will be an extremely tough year. The series' level
is incredible, but I expect a lot of fun too. I'm honoured of being part of
this pack, I have to thanks Toyota for providing me thise great chance..."
